The climbing ivy on the sides of the historic brick buildings on the UW campus certainly add some flavor to late morning walks.

Winter wonderland

Campus was blanketed in snow after a powerful storm moved through the PNW. I made sure to charge my drone batteries the night before in the event if any power outages occurred and was able to capture some of the wonderful winter sights.

The UW Story pole was installed during the late summer of 2025. I had the great honor of attending this special event to document.

Slight miscommunication
Slight miscommunication

This photo was taken on a morning that was mostly grey and cold. To my great fortune somehow, I arrived a bit delayed due to some miscommunication on my end on where to meet for photos. The skies cleared with perfect timing to bring our backdrop to life for the photos.

Dancers put their entire bodies and souls into perfecting a very challenging routine.

It was a great pleasure to talk creative writing while on this photoshoot. Now looking back, I probably did way more talking than photographing but that’s all good as the photos came out nicely.

Future in good hands

I’m continuously amazed and reassured by the young people I get to collaborate with who are wanting to give their time back to volunteer and learn about the UW Farm.

Pollinators certainly love the UW Farm during the spring. I imagine these little ‘chonker’ bumble bees have a way of communicating with these sunflowers unlike us.

First fall
First fall

This was taken during my first fall season in the PNW. Coming from California’s Central Valley, where it’s in the 70’s well into Winter, I was amazed at how cold my hands could get and also with the colors that started to show as the seasons changed.

Watching the horizon
Watching the horizon

I took a long walk during a summer evening and watched a few Washington State Ferries sail by. It’s become a bit therapeutic at this point.

Youthful spark

Each year there are thousands of tourist that venture into University District to catch the gorgeous sight of the UW Cherry Blossoms in full bloom. I try to take my photos early enough to beat the crows and have enough space to focus on the human interactions.

Cherry Wander

One of my favorite parts of the UW Cherry Blossom season is catching the reactions of those taking in the sight. No matter your age, you look up before you look down to get your phone.

Freeze
Freeze

During my first winter in the PNW I questioned a lot about the entire move into a climate that got this cold. One morning I decided to get over it and walk around campus as I needed to make amends with temperatures that would be part of my full experience.

Watch party

The new Overlook Walk on the Seattle Waterfront is a really big deal for the human-level experience of what our cities can be. The world presents itself as if you were in an amphitheater with highly coveted tickets to our beautiful planet.

Would you like a photo I took?

This young couple caught my eye one night while on a walk near the water. The timing was perfect as the sun was setting and a bird was flying across the sky. I waited until they got up and asked if they’d like the photo I took to keep for their memories. The young man sent a very nice email thanking me.

Portrait session
Portrait session

During portraits I always try to build as much rapport as quickly as possible with those on camera. Nothing like proposing a hero pose to help someone channel their inner-superhero.

Bending light
Bending light

What can I say as a photographer other than light is my entire life. On top of that, I’m still a little kid at heart and so I got excited when lasers were integral to the demonstration.

Murmuration
Murmuration

It’s not every day that you get to share a piece of knowledge with a lifelong physicist, but on this day I did exactly that while walking alongside Marshall as our photoshoot was wrapping. There was a massive group of starlings moving swiftly through the air, as if all were tied to strings in perfect harmony and as we both looked up, I said “Wow, that’s a murmuration!”

Raving research
Raving research

The UW held the first ever Fitness Rave that was a hybrid event of sorts with a choreographed opening between two faculty members collaborating for research. I was the lucky one to follow it from rehearsals to the final night when the event took place.

Into the light

There is an early start program for incoming first-year students that allows participants to understand what the city of Seattle has to offer in addition to their studies at the University of Washington. On this day, I followed a class that went out on canoes. I myself did not get a canoe.

I was tasked with gathering some new photos for our revamping of the college view book, which gets sent out to prospective students across the country. A big attraction is Rainier Vista, and although Mt. Rainier was not out on this day, the clouds and campus vibe came through beautifully in this shot that I used as my personal workspace wallpaper for a while.

Denny Hall
Denny Hall

This building really has it’s own gravity and whenever you’re near it, you can feel this. I had a long lens in my kit this day and staked out from across the way to see how students walk by it would appear in the photo. I always felt like this could have been a postcard or something like that.

Students in a Humanities First expedition walked through the downtown core and it made for some fantastic backdrops. To my great fortune, one student was wearing a University of Washington branded sweater and I couldn’t have asked for better brand placement in a photo.

This is the first photo I have ever appeared in while on assignment for work. The ‘ballers’ you see in the background are me and our student assistant at the time who was a very good sport about being in the shot with me. I woke up early to make it to the sporting goods store to acquire a basketball for the photoshoot. Luckily no purchase of a hoop was required, as we made use of one on campus.
